Chapter 34 Keywords Flashcards
The component of the immune system involving antibodies that are secreted by B cells and circulate as soluble proteins in blood plasma and lymph
humoral immunity
Immunity resulting from a cell-mediated immune
response. Also called cell-mediated immunity
cellular immunity
A glycoprotein made by plasma cells (mature B cells) in response to the introduction of an antigen
Antibody
Any of the lymphocytes that mature in the bone marrow and, when stimulated by a particular antigen, differentiate into plasma cells
BCell
The process by which an antigen selects the best-fitting B-cell receptor, activating that B cell, resulting in the synthesis of antibody and clonal expansion
Clonal selection
An area of the antigen molecule that stimulates the production of, and combines with, specific antibodies; also known as the antigenic determinant site
Epitope
Any of the lymphocytes that mature in the thymus and have the ability to recognize specific peptide antigens through the receptors on their cell surface
Tcell
An inactive lymphocyte clone derived from a sensitized B or T cell capable of an accentuated response to a subsequent antigen exposure
Memory Cell
Of or relating to an immune response by the body against one of its own cells or tissues
Autoimmunity
A mature, differentiated B lymphocyte that synthesizes and secretes antibody
Plasma cells
An antibody of a single type that is produced by a population of genetically identical plasma cells (a clone)
monoclonal antibody
A foreign (nonself) substance to which lymphocytes respond
Antigen
