Chapter 22: Reproductive System Flashcards
ovaries
solid, oval structures which lie in lateral wall of pelvic cavity; descend to bottom of pelvic brim
broad ligament
largest; holds ovary in place & is attached to uterine tubes & uterus
suspensory ligament
holds ovary on upper end
ovarian ligament
rounded, cord like thickening of the broad ligament; attaches lower end of ovary to uterus
oocyte
egg cell
when are primordial follicles produced?
during fetal development
ovarian medulla
mostly loose connective tissue & contains blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, & nerves
ovarian cortex
compact tissue w/ granular appearance due to ovarian follicles
ovulation
release of mature oocyte from ovary
oogonia
primordial germ cells that divide by mitosis to produce more oogonia in fetal ovaries; develop into primary oocytes
oogenesis
egg cell formation
how is cytoplasm distributed in oogenesis?
unequally, forming a secondary oocyte and first polar body
ovum
egg cell that may later be fertilized by sperm
what happens if the secondary oocyte is fertilized?
a second polar body will appear, along with a zygote
polar body
allow for egg formation with large amounts of cytoplasm & organelles, & haploid # of chromosomes
