Adaptive leadership
A leadership style in which managers make decisions unilaterally, without input from subordinates
Autocratic
An emphasis on the personality characteristics of a leader. Focuses on what leaders do and how they act.
Behavior approach
Falls into 2 general types of behavior (combined for success)
Task behavior- help group members to achieve their objectives
Relationship behaviors- help followers FEEL comfortable with themselves, with each other, & the situation that they’re in
A program focused on improved situational awareness, sound critical decision making, effective communication, proper task allocation, and successful teamwork and leadership (NFPA 1500)
Crew resource management
An organizational process wherein the supervisor divides work among the subordinates and gives them the responsibility and authority to accomplish the respective tasks
Delegation
A leadership style in which managers reach decisions with the input of the employees but are responsible for making the final decision
Democratic
The act or condition of following a leader; adherence. The characteristic that leader can be effective only to the extent that followers are willing to accept their leadership
Followership
All activities to train and educate employees
Human resource development
The process of managing employees in a company. The process may include hiring, training, and motivating employees
Human resource management
The process of having the right number of people in the right place at the right time who can accomplish a task efficiently and effectively
Human resource planning
A policy or attitude of letting things take their own course without interfering.
Laissez-faire
Pre-existing conditions within the safety system that could lead to a loss through provoking errors or weakening
Latent conditions
A complex process by which a person influences others to accomplish a mission, task, or objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent

The art of getting things done through and with people in formally organized groups. To forecast, plan, organize, command, coordinate, and control

Naturalistic decision making
Power that reflects the effectiveness of the individual
Personal power
Power that is defined by the role the individual has within the organization
Positional power
The capacity of one party to influence another party

A model of how people make quick, effective decisions when faced with complex situation by generating a possible course of action based knowledge intuition and comparing it to the constraints imposed by the situation, then selecting the first course of action that is not rejected
Recognition primed decision making
A leadership approach focusing on serving others, rather than accruing power or taking control
Servant leadership
The ongoing activity of assessing what is going on around you during the complex and dynamic environment of a fire incident (NFPA 1410)
Situational awareness
A leadership approach where a supervisor adjusts the style of leadership to fit the development level of subordinates. During emergency operations, it means adjusting the style of leadership based on the changing conditions of the incident
Situational leadership
An emphasis on the skills or capabilities of a leader
Skills approach
The process of attracting, selecting, and maintaining an adequate supply of labor, as well as reducing the size of the labor force when required
Staffing
An emphasis on the traits of an effective leader
Trait approach
A leadership approach that causes change in individuals and social systems. In its ideal form, it creates valuable and positive change in the followers with the end goal of developing followers into leaders
