Chapter 16 - Skin - Functions and Structure Flashcards
What is the accessory structures of the skin?
What does Integument means?
- Hair, glands and nails
- Covering
What is the functions of Skin?
- Provides a protective membrane
- Skin glands lubricate and cool the skin
- Receptor for sensations
- Helps maintain body temperature
What produces sweat?
- Sweat glands produce a watery secretion that evaporates and cools
What produces sebum?
- Sebaceous glands produce an oily secretion that lubricates the skin and hair
What does the Receives sensation do?
- React to pain, temperature, pressure, and touch
What is the Thermoregulates?
- interprets message from heat center in the brain
What does the Thermoregulation allows your body to maintain?
- Its core internal temperature
- Its supposed to help maintain homeostasis
What is another name for maintain homeostasis?
- state of equilibrium
What is the hypothalamus?
- a section of your brain that controls thermoregulation
What does the Hypothalamus do?
- They (your muscles, organs, glands, and nervous system) respond in a variety of ways to help return your temperature to normal
What is the Epidermis?
- outermost (1st layer of the skin), thin cellular membrane
What is the Epidermis composed of?
- squamous epithelium
What does the epidermis lack?
- Blood vessels, lymphatic vessels and connective tissue
What is the Dermis?
- Next layer (middle layer); dense fibrous, connective tissue
What is the Dermis composed of?
- blood vessels, lymph and nerve fibers as well as accessory organs of the skin, hair follicles, sweat glands and sebaceous glands
What is the Subcutaneous tissue?
- thick, fat-containing tissue
- the last layer of the skin
What is Adipocytes?
- They store large amounts of fat
- Acts as a heat insulator and for energy storage
Where is Adipocytes control?
- In the Subcutaneous layer
