Chapter 11 – The Cardiovascular System - Blood Vessels and the Circulation of Blood Flashcards
What does the Cardiovascular System do?
delivers oxygen and nutrients to cells of body tissue
What does the Cardiovascular system consist of?
- Heart (muscular pump)
- Blood vessels (fuel line and transportation network)
What is Arteries?
the vessels that lead away from the heart
What is Veins?
move deoxygenated blood toward the heart from the tissues
How is Veins different from Arteries?
- the walls is thinner in Veins
What are smaller branches of arteries called?
Where do the smaller branches of arteries carry blood to?
- Arterioles
- carry the blood to the tiniest of blood vessels, the capillaries.
What are small veins that carry waste-filled blood back to the heart called?
Venules
What does Capillaries do?
They form the point of exchange for oxygen and nutrients into body cells and waste products coming from body cells.
What is the smallest vessels?
Capillaries
Arteries, their walls are lined with?
- connective tissue, muscle tissue and elastic tissue, with an innermost lining of epithelial cells
What is the innermost lining of epithelial cells in the Arteries called?
- Endothelium
What does the Endothelial Cells do?
- secrete factors that affect the size of the blood vessels, reduce blood clotting and promote the growth of blood vessels
Why is the Brachial Artery important?
- because blood pressure is routinely measured at this junction
