Chapter 11 – The Cardiovascular System - Heart Arrhythmias and Pathology Flashcards
What is Heart Block?
Is failure to properly conduct of contractions of the heart
What is Flutter?
is rapid but regular contractions of the heart
What is Fibrillation?
What is it usually over (#)?
- Is very rapid, irregular contractions of the heart
- usually over 300 beats per minute
What is Congestive Heart Disease (CHF)?
The heart is unable to pump the required amount of blood.
What is Congestive Heart Disease (CHF) the primarily result of in the U.S.A.?
What does it result in?
Can it be fatal?
- High blood pressure and coronary artery disease
- Result in Pulmonary edema
- Yes, can be fatal if untreated.
What is Coronary artery disease (CAD) a result of?
The result of Atherosclerosis
What is Atherosclerosis?
The deposition of fatty compounds on the inner lining of the coronary arteries
What is Thrombotic occlusion (occlusive/mural)?
blocking of the artery with a clot
What is Ischemia?
blood flow is decrease causing death to the part of the heart the blood can’t go to
What can Ischemia be a result of?
- Can be a results of coronary artery disease
- Can be caused by thrombotic occlusion of a blood vessel
- Can lead to lead to myocardial infarction
What is Necrosis?
death of the tissues
What is Infarction?
the death of the myocardial tissue is known as an infarct
What is Acute Coronary Syndromes (ACS)?
It describes the consequences after plaque rupture in coronary arteries
What is Unstable angina?
Chest pain at rest or chest pain of increasing frequency which can be relieved with nitroglycerin
What is Myocardial infarction (MI)?
a heart attack
