Chapter 15 - Musculoskeletal System - Bone Formation Flashcards
What is Ossification?
(process of bone formation) replacement of cartilage with bone
What is Osteoblast?
(-blast meaning to bud or sprout) are immature osteocytes that produce bony tissue that replaces cartilage during ossification.
Ex. a healing bone
What is Osteocytes?
(bone cells) nourishes and maintains bone
What is Osteoclast?
(-clast means to break) reabsorb or digest bone (remodels bone)
What is needed in the body for proper bone formation?
Calcium and phosphorus – and you need Vit D to help absorb into the body
Osteoclasts and osteoblasts work…
together tearing down and rebuilding bone tissue
The skeleton is…
a source of calcium
Calcium phosphate helps…
create hard bone from these sources
Calcium is necessary for…
nerve transmittal to muscle, including heart muscle and muscles attached to bones
Calcium level is maintained in…
blood by the parathyroid gland, which secretes a hormone to release calcium from bone
How many bones is in the human body?
