Chapter 11 – The Cardiovascular System - Heart Sounds Flashcards
What is Diastole?
relaxation of the heart
What is Systole?
contraction of the heart
Which valves open and which valves close during diastole?
- The tricuspid and mitral valves open as blood passes from the right and left atria into the ventricles.
- The pulmonary and aortic valves close.
The diastole-systole cardiac cycle occurs between?
- 70 to 80 times per minute (100,000 times per day)
What is the lubb sound?
closure of the tricuspid and mitral valves at the beginning of systole
What is the dubb sound?
closure of the aortic and pulmonary valves at the end of systole
What is the murmur sound?
an abnormal heart sound caused by improper valve closure
What is Blood Pressure?
The force that blood exerts on arterial walls
Blood Pressure measured using a?
sphygmomanometer (blood pressure cuff)
Blood Pressure expressed as a fraction…
systolic pressure/diastolic pressure
Example: 120/80 mm Hg
What is Hypertension?
When is it Hypertension?
- High blood pressure
- When BP > 140/90 mm Hg
What is the new guidelines for patients over 60?
Treatment only if BP exceeds 150/90
