Chapter 13 Part 4 Flashcards
What are the 2 important brainstem nuclei for swallowing?
Nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), Nucleus ambiguous (NA)
Where is the nucleus tractus solitarius located?
Medulla
Acts as a swallowing sensory center, taste, touch, respiratory, and cardiovascular input, sends information to the second brainstem nucleus
Nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS)
What cranial nerves does the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) receive?
5, 7, 9, 10
Where is the nucleus ambiguous located?
Medulla
Motor swallowing center, innervates swallowing muscles
Nucleus ambiguous
What cranial nerves does the nucleus ambiguous receive?
9, 10, 12
What 2 components make up the swallowing center of the medulla
Nucleus ambiguous, nucleus tractus solitarius
Activates voluntary muscles of swallowing
Primary motor cortex
Processes sensation of eating
Primary sensory cortex
May mediate motor and sensory information for swallowing, and provide some level of swallow control
Insula
Part of the brain that may provide the attention needed in swallowing
Anterior cingulate cortex
Part of the brain that may play role in the motor planning of swallowing
Premotor cortex
Part of the brain that may incorporate sensory information from food and liquid into swallowing as food and liquid pass through the swallowing structures
Thalamus and basal ganglia
What is one reason why we cough?
Get rid of food stuck in throat?, Cold and viruses, mucus
What are the 3 components of a cough response?
Afferent vagus fibers, cough center in brainstem, respiratory muscles and larynx
Convey sensory information from cough receptors in swallowing tract
Afferent vagus fibers
Information from the afferent vagus fibers goes to….
Cough center in brainstem
_____ signals are sent from cough center to respiratory muscles and larynx to generate cough
Efferent
Occurs when the bolus enters the airway below the level of the vocal cords
Aspiration
