Chapter 1.2 Flashcards
What are the three types of nervous cells
-sensory neurons
- interneurons
- > located predominantly in the brain and spinal cord
- > involved in reflex arcs which controls reflexes
- > by the time info makes it to the brain, the reflex arc has already carried out the action
-motor neurons
What is the CNS composed of
-the brain and the spinal cord
What is the PNS composed of? What is the function of the PNS?
- the nerve tissue and fibers outside of the brain/spinal cord
- includes 31 pairs of spinal nerves and 12 pairs of cranial nerves
- the function of the PNS is to connect the CNS to the rest of the body
What is the PNS divided into? What two parts
-it is divided into the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system
What does the somatic nervous system consist of? How does it transmit its information
- it consists of sensory and motor neurons distributed through the joints, muscle and skin
- sensory neurons transmit information through afferent fibers
- motor neurons transmit information through efferent fibers
What is the autonomic nervous system associated with? What functions does it regulate? Is it involved in regulating body temperature?
- it is associated with functions that involve involuntary organs and glands
- > this involves glandular secretions, digestion, respiration and heartbeat
- they are independent of conscious control
- yes
- > it regulates body temperature through sweating or piloerection(goosebumbs when cold)
What two components are the autonomic nervous system composed of?
-it is composed of the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous system
What is the relationship between the parasympathetic and the sympathetic nervous system. Go over their specific functions on page 9.
- they have an antagonistic relationship
- the parasympathetic is rest and digest
- > it conserves energy
- the sympathetic is fight or flight
- > activated by stress
