Ch 24 Extinction Flashcards
discontinuing reinforcement of a previously reinforced behavior
extinction
behavior reduction procedure in which reinforcement for escape-maintained behavior is withheld; used for bx that are maintained by negative reinforcement
escape extinction
temporary increase in frequency, intensity, or duration of bx after reinforcement is first withheld/when an extinction procedure is initially implemented
extinction burst
temporary increase in novel or varied/diverse forms of a bx during the extinction process. in shaping, variability occurs when previous approximations are no longer reinforced, leading to new bxs. in chaining, variability occurs when a step no longer is reinforced, causing changes in response patterns.
extinction-induced variability
reappearance of a previously extinguished bx after a period of time
spontaneous recovery
reappearance of a previously reinforced bx when reinfocement for a more recently reinforced bx is placed on extinction
resurgence
continued occurrence of a bx despite the removal of reinforcement
resistance to extinction
