Exchange of information between people.
Communication
Used in health care to gather information relevant to the patient’s problem; establish rapport and to provide confidence; to facilitate understand on the patient’s problem to assist in comprehensive patient management
Communication
Viewed as a direction; although a solution is provided, appropriate follow-through and proper understanding of the direction(s) must be demonstrated
Cueing
Exercising control or influence; being assertive; putting one’s idea forward
Dominance
Defined as a self-centered, unresponsive, and insensitive
Hostile
Selective, system, individual, ongoing transactions that allow people to reflect and build personal knowledge and insight about one another and create shared meanings
Interpersonal Communication
Purposeful and skilled interactions with the patient and other individuals involved in the patient’s care, using various physical therapy procedures and techniques to produce a change in the patient’s condition
Interventions
An effective communication tool that demonstrates interest and concern for the patient and his/her individual needs
Listening
A communication technique to facilitate rapport and let the patient see that PTA is effectively listening that allows the patients the opportunity to provide substantial information concerning their care
Open-ended questions
By using probing questions and appropriate communication skills, accountability, listening, and responsibility, the patient avoids being places in a reactive position
Proactive
Technique of questions patients that leads to insightful, rewarding, and responsive care
Probing Questions
The presentation of a question; allows patient to decipher information, solve problems, and provide solution to activities
Prompting
A component of active involvement of all areas of patient care
Responsibility
Defined as following the lead of others, being passive, and quick to comply
Submissive
Defined as open-minded, responsive, and sensitive
Warmth
Systemic, reliable, and appropriate investigative questioning, listening, and active participation at all levels of patient care
Accountability
Two-dimensional model that consists of four behaviors (dominance, submission, hostility, ad warmth), which fall in 4 Quadrants
