Ch 1: Terms Flashcards
Organization and General Plan of the Body
Inorganic Chemicals
Simple molecules made of one or two elements other than carbon (with few exceptions)
Organic Chemicals
Often very complex and always contain the elements carbon and hydrogen
Cells
The smallest living units of structure and function
Tissue
A group of cells with similar structure and function
4 Types of Tissues
- Epithelial Tissue
- Connective Tissue
- Muscle Tissue
- Nerve Tissue
Epithelial Tissue
Cover or line body surfaces.
Ex: Outer later of skin, sweat glands, walls of capillaries, kidney tubules
Connective Tissues
Connect and support parts of the body; some transport or store materials.
Ex: Blood, bone, cartilage, adipose tissue
Muscle Tissues
Specialized for contraction, which brings about movement.
Ex: Skeletal muscles, heart
Nerve Tissues
Specialized to generate and transmit electrochemical impulses that regulate body function.
Ex: Brain, optic nerve
Organ
A group of tissues precisely arranged so as to accomplish specific functions.
Ex: Kidneys, individual bones, liver, lungs, stomach
Organ System
A group of organs that all contribute to a particular function.
Ex: Urinary System, Digestive System, Respiratory System
Microbiota
Bacteria and microorganisms
Microbiome
A small ecosystem inside the body that has bacteria.
Ex: surface of the skin, oral cavity, vagina in women
