Causes Of Disease- Overview Flashcards
What does eitology mean?
Causes of disease
What are idiopathic diseases?
Conditions with no known cause
What are intrinsic conditions?
(From within)
Changes in an individual genome
Give some examples of intrinsic conditions
Nuclear or mitochondrial, inherited or de novo mutations and epigenetic modifications
What are cell autonomous intrinsic changes?
Cell X no longer expresses structural protein Y so cell X is the wrong shape
What are cell non-autonomous intrinsic changes?
Cell X no longer secretes protein hormone Y so cell Z no longer functions
What are some extrinsic causes of conditions?
Injury, infection, nutrition and diet, lifestyle (smoking, workplace toxins), chemical poisoning, exposure to radiation
What are the grey areas in causes of disease?
Intrinsic/ extrinsic areas can be ambiguous and subjective
Causes of disease are often a chain of events
When is age an intrinsic cause?
When it describes the biological process of ageing
What is a synonym for intrinsic?
Genetic
What is a synonym for extrinsic?
Environmental
When are genetic/environmental used instead of intrinsic/extrinsic?
When they are more reflective of that disease
