Cardiovascular Pathology IV Flashcards
What parts of the heart does an hemangiosarcoma effect?
hemangiosarcoma= neoplasm originates from endothelium (blood vessels)
The right auricle and atrium
What is the most common primary cardiac tumour of dogs?
Hemangiosarcoma
What can occur if a hemagiosarcoma ruptures?
can cause cardiac tamponade
Where is a paraganglioma usually situated?
between the aorta and the pulmonary artery
What is an aortic body?
chemoreceptor organ, it senses changes in blood CO2 content
What is the adventitia?
Tunica externa or the outermost layer of the vessels
What three things make up Virchows triad/ Thrombosis?
- Endothelial injury
- Abnormal blood flow/ Stasis
- Hypercoagulability
Name two toxins that have an affect on vessels
- Ergot Fungi
- Fescue grass
What are the symptoms of ‘fescue foot’ in cattle?
Necrosis and gangrene of the lower extremities
this is exacerbated by cold weather
What is fibrinoid necrosis?
Necrosis associated with endothelial damage
characterised by an accumulation of serum proteins
What is arteriosclerosis?
‘hardening of the arteries’ and loss of elasticity
common in domestic animals
What is atherosclerosis?
a sub-type of arteriosclerosis defined by atheromas (Fibrofatty plaques)
* rare in domestic animals
What are some common aetiologies of arteriosclerosis?
- Calcinogenic plants
- Vitamin D toxicosis
- Metastatic mineralisation
Where does medial hypertrophy usually take place?
Usually occurs within pulmonary arteries as a response to hypoxia
What is a hemangiosarcoma?
malignant tumour of endothelial cells
