Behavioral Science 2.3 Flashcards
Vestibular sense
Rotational and linear acceleration
Pinna(auricle)
Cartilage portion of the outer ear channel sound into the external auditory canal
Tympanic membrane
Vibrates in phase with external sounds. Separates outer and middle ear.
Ossicles
Small bones that transmit and amplify the vibration of the tympanic membrane to the inner ear.
Incus, malleus,& stapes
Inner ear
Cochlea, vestibule, & semicircular canals
Filled with endolymph and sits in perilymph fluid
Cochlea
Composed of threeparts called scalae. The center scalae how is the hearing apparatus called the organ of Corti
Organ of Corti
Rests on the basilar membrane which transmits sounds from the outer scalae
Vestibule
Made of utricle and saccule. Sense linear acceleration
Have modified hairs covered in otoliths that resist acceleration to determine bodily acceleration
Semi circular canals
Rotational acceleration.
Sensed by looks oriented perpendicular to one another.
Auditory pathway
Information passes from vestibulochlear nerve to brain stem->medial geniculate nucleus -> auditory cortex, superior olive, and inferior colliculus (reflex)
Place theory
Hairs closer to the window sense high pitch sounds where hairs deeper into the cochlea sense low pitch sounds
