Behavioral Science 1.3 Flashcards
Meninges
Thick sheet of connective tissue surrounding the brain (dura arachnoid and pi mater)
Which brain structures were developed first?
The end brain and midbrain
Sections of the forebrain
Cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, limbic system, thalamus, hypothalamus
Limbic system
Neural structures related to memory and emotion
Cerebral cortex
Outer most section of the brain responsible for many “human” traits
Hindbrain
The most central portion of the brain meeting the spinal cord: Controls the most basic functions of life. Includes the cerebellum, medulla oblongata, and reticular formation
Medulla oblongata
Regulates vital functions such as breathing heartbeat and digestion
The pons
Located just above the medulla contains sensory and motor pathways between the cortex and medulla
Cerebellum
Helps maintain posture balance and coordination
The midbrain
Receives sensory and motor information associated with involuntary reflex.
Forebrain
Located above the mid brain is associated with complex perceptual cognitive and behavioral process
Cortical maps
Mapping which portions of the brain do different things
