Ascribed status
Involuntary, derived from clearly identifiable characteristics
Achieved status
Status acquired through direct individual efforts.
Social class
The category of people with shared Socio economic characteristics. This includes jobs, attitudes, and behaviors. The three classes are the upper, middle, and lower class.
Prestige
The respect in importance related to a specific occupation or association
Power
The capacity to influence people through real or perceived rewards and punishments
Anomie
The lack of social norms which lead to the erosion of social solidarity. Three components include individualism, social inequality, and isolation
Social capital
The investment people make in their society in return for economic or collective rewards
Meritocracy
Advancement of the social ladder is based on intellectual talent and achievement
Social mobility
The ability to move between social classes.
intragenerational-changes in social status that happened within a persons life time
Intergenerational – changes in social status that occur between generations of a family
Poverty
The Socio economic condition of gross economic disparity. Poverty line is a calculated value of the bare minimum needed for survival.
Social reproduction
The passing on of social any quality especially poverty from one generation to the next
Absolute poverty
When someone does not have enough resources to acquire basic life needs
Relative poverty
When one is poor in comparison to a larger population
Social exclusion
The feeling of powerlessness or alienation from society
Spatial inequality
Social stratification across territories in their populations
Urban areas have more diverse economic opportunities but typically house a lower income racial and ethnic minority
Environmental injustice
A skewed distribution of environmental hazards in communities with lower economic status
Globalization
The interconnectedness of the world which has led to further inequalities in space, food, water, energy, housing, and education.
Incidence
The calculated number of new cases per number of people per unit time(per 1000 people per year)
Prevalence
The calculated number of cases of a disease per population per time
Morbidity
The burden or degree of illness associated with a disease
Mortality
Deaths caused by a given disease
Secondary sickness
Exacerbation of health outcomes caused by social injustice
Female health profiles
Typically better than male profiles due to lower rates of life-threatening illness and higher rates of accessing health resources
Asian health profiles
The best in comparison to white, African-American, or Hispanic
