B7: FOOD SECURITY Flashcards
What are the factors which threaten food security?
-increasing birth rate in developing countries
-changing diets in developed countries (scarce food resources transported around the world)
-new pests/pathogens (loss of crops meaning less food available which leads to cost of food increasing)
-environmental changes (eg: widespread famine)
-cost of agricultural inputs (eg: cost of caring for livestock)
-conflict
Modern intensive farming
-efficiency of food production improved by restricting energy transfer from animals to the environment:
-restricting movement - decreases energy used for movement
-controlling temp - decreases energy used for maintain body temp
-high protein diet
Advs of modern intensive farming
-increases food security as it decreases energy used up for other things so more energy is used for growth
-increases efficiency
-cheaper food
Disadvs of modern intensive farming
-animal welfare/abuse
-meat may be lower quality due to increase in fat
-costs of maintaining temp in controlled environment
How are fish stocks conserved?
-control of net size
-introduction of fishing quotas
What is mycoprotein and what is it used for ?
-a protein generated from fungi
-used to produce high-protein meat substitutes
What is the name of the fungus used to produce mycrpotein?
fusarium
