B5: BLOOD GLUCOSE CONC + DIABETES Flashcards
What happens when blood glucose levels are too high?
-receptors in pancreas detect increase
-pancreas coordinates response
-insulin is secreted by pancreas to bring BGC back down to normal
What happens when blood glucose levels are too low?
-pancreas detects decrease
-pancreas coordinates response
-glucagon is secreted by pancreas to bring BGC back up to normal
How does insulin bring BGC back to normal?
-stimulates liver and muscles cells to convert glucose into glycogen for storage
-stimulates cells to take in more glucose
How does glucagon bring BGC back to normal?
stimulates liver to break down glycogen into glucose
What is type 1 diabetes?
-pancreas is unable to produce enough/any insulin
-BGC uncontrollably high
What is type 2 diabetes and what is the major risk factor?
-cells lost sensitivity to insulin and do not respond to the insulin produced by pancreas
-high BGC
-obesity is a major risk factor
What are the symptoms of type 1 diabetes?
-tiredness
-losing weight
-passing lots of urine
-thirsty
What are the symptoms of type 2 diabetes?
-tiredness
-passing lots of urine
-thirsty
How is type 1 diabetes treated?
-injecting insulin
-healthy diet
-regular exercise
How is type 2 diabetes treated?
-healthy diet (carbohydrates controlled)
-exercise
-oral medication
