B5- human reproduction hormones Flashcards
how long is the menstrual cycle?
28 days
what is the first hormone released during menstruation? how long does it last?
FSH- day 1-7
what is the second hormone secreted during menstrual cycle? how long does it last?
oestrogen: Day 7-14
what is the third hormone secreted during the menstrual cycle? how long does it last?
LH: Day14
what is the fourth hormone secreted during the menstrual cycle? and how long for?
Progesterone: Day14-28
what does FSH do?
causes egg to mature in ovary & stimulates the ovaries to release of oestrogen
what does oestrogen do?
stops FSH (so only 1 egg mature in cycle) repairs and thickens the uterus lining & stimulates pituitary gland to release LH
what does LH do?
triggers ovulation (release of an egg)
what does progesterone do?
maintains the lining of the uterus during middle part of menstrual cycle and during pregnancy. stops FSH from being produced
which hormones are released from pituitary glands
FSH, LH
which hormones are released from the ovaries?
oestrogen, progesterone
what is a contraceptive?
method to prevent pregnancy, can be hormonal + non-hormonal
what are hormonal contraceptions?
contains oestrogen + progesterone, only works by preventing LH and FSH
what is barrier contraceptives?
prevents sperm from reaching egg > fertilisation
what is intrauterine devices? (IUD)
works by killing sperm, preventing implantation of embrey-lasts 5-10 years
what do fertility drugs include?
LH & FSH
What is the process of IVF?
1)hormones to stimulate egg production (FSH LH)
2) multiple eggs taken from ovaries
3)sperm cell taken + prepared
4)sperm + egg cell form embryo (fertilisation)
5) embryos developed in vitro, 24-48 hours 37C
6) embryos implanted back into uterus
List hormonal contraceptives
-Copper IUD- releases P
-contraceptive implant- releases P last 3 years
-injection- P 2-3 months
-patch: releases P + Eo, last 1 week
-the ‘pill’ releases P + eo, side effect headache + nausea 99% effective
just P pill, less side effect, 99% effective
what are 3 non-hormonal contraceptives:
-condom
-diaphragm: typically used with spermicide
-sterilisation, Female: tying fallopian tube
male: cutting and tying sperm ducks
