B5- endocrine system Flashcards
What is the endocrine system?
group of glands that secrete hormones into the blood
what are hormones?
Large proteins that are chemical messengers, travel in the blood to their target organs to bring about response.
where is the pituitary gland located?
BONUS: what is it sometimes referred to as ?
the brain,
the master gland
in 3 points, what is the role of the pituitary gland?
> secretes several hormones into blood
some hormones have direct effect on target organs
whereas others act on endocrine glands to stimulate the release of other hormones
what 4 hormones does the pituitary gland secrete?
TSH= thyroid stimulating hormone
FSH= follicle stimulating hormone
LH= luteinizing hormone
ADH= Anticliurettic
what are 2 features of chemical responses?
slower, long lasting
what are 2 features of nervous system responces?
quicker, not long lasting
what causes an increase in BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVLE (BGL)?
consumption of carbs
what hormone is released after an increase in BGL
incillin from pancreas
what is the target organ after BGL is increased and hormone is relased?
liver
what is glucose?
a sugar
what is glycogen?
storage of glucose in liver & lungs
what is incillin
hormone, to increase the uptake of glucose stored in glycoen
what is glucagon?
hormone that breaks down glucagen back into glucose
what is type 1 diabeties?
pancreas unable to produce enough insulin
