B2- blood + heart Flashcards
what do red blood cells do?
carries oxygen around the body, contains haemogoblin
what do WBC do ?
part of immune system and defence system against pathogens
What do platelets do?
clot blood to prevent blood loss
(sickle cell inherited disorder
What do plasmas do?
liquid- solution enabling to move through body and dissolve gasses such as CO2 and carry nutrients
What do Arteries do?
Describe them
-carry blood AWAY from the body
-High pressure
-thick walls vs small lumen
What do veins do?
describe them
carry blood TOWARDS the heart
-low pressure
thin walls + big lumen
what do Capillaries do?
describe them
involved in the EXCHANGE OF MATERIALS at the tissue
-1 cell thick walls
-permable walls so substances can diffuse
What is a double circulatory system?
blood follows two circuits
pulmonary circuit: transport deoxygenated blood to lungs
systematic circuit: transports oxygenated blood all around the body.
What are the coronary arteries?
On outside of the heart, SUPPLY OXYGEN to the heart with blood containing glucose + oxegyn
what is oxygen needed for?
respiration
what do valves do?
prevent the back flow of blood
what is coronary heart disease?
Fatty materials (cholesterol) building up in the coronary arteries which can lead to narrowing of the lumen.
how can the arteries get clogged?
smocking, obesity, high cholesterol levels
Why are fatty deposits bad ( what does it lead to?)
reduced blood flow
reduced oxygen + glucose
reduced respiration
less energy released
heart unable to contract
possible heart attack
DETAIL DESCRIPTION SUMMARISING CORONARY HEART DISEASE
coronary arteries start developing fatty deposits (containing cholesterol) leading to the lumen narrowing causing to a lack of oxygen which can lead to a possible heart attack.
