B4- Aerobic and Anaerobic respiration Flashcards
what is aerobic respiration
RESPIRATION WITH OXYGEN
-most efficient way to transfer energy from glucose
-
what is anaerobic respiration?
your body can’t supply oxygen to your muscles, they start doing anaerobic respiration (used in exercise)
-WITHOUT OXYGEN
-doesn’t transfer much energy
because GLUCOSE ISN’T FULLY OXIDISED
-only emergencies
what is word equation for anaerobic respiration?
glucose —> lactic acid
what is word equation for anaerobic respiration within plants and yeast cells?
glucose —> ethanol + carbon dioxide
what is oxygen debt?
amount of extra oxygen the body needs after exercise to react with lactic acid and remove it
what does lactic acid cause?
muscle fatigue
aching
muscles stop contracting efficiently
what happens when you exercise
muscle contraction- increases
demand for energy increases
increased respiration
heart rate flow increases
blood flow increases
breathing rate increases
