B1- Osmosis, active transport and diffusion Flashcards
What does water transport through in osmosis?
partially permeable membrane
What is Osmosis ?
the net movement of water from an are of high water concentration (dilute solution) to an area of lower water concentration (Concentrated solution)
facts about osmosis
-passive
-High to Low water concentration
-water only
what are examples of osmosis?
-Water entering root hair cell to keep cell turgid
What is Active transport?
active transport is the process which molecules move across a partially permeable membrane from a low (dilute) to a high (concentrated) solution.
facts about active transport
-Against concentration gradient
-requires energy
Examples of active transport
-carbon dioxide leaves cell, sugars are absorbed at end of small intestine
-Root hair cell absorption of mineral ions from soil
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the spreading out of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of Lower concentration.
where does diffusion occur? and why?
Diffusion occurs in gasses and liquids because particles are free to move.
facts about diffusion
-down concentration gradient
-doesn’t require energy
-transports of solutes passive
examples of diffusion
-Gas exchange in lungs
-Oxygen leaves leaf
-carbon dioxide leaves cell
