B3- pathogen + diseases Flashcards
What are communicable diseases?
Diseases caused by pathogens that can be passed from one organism to another.
What are non-communicable diseases?
Diseases which are not infections and cannot be passed from one organism to another.
what are the 4 communicable diseases
Bacteria, Virus, prostits and fungus
describe bacteria
reproduce quickly, outside of cell, produce toxins which damage cells
describe viruses
not a cell, replicate inside of cell, needs a host cell (for DNA), destroys + kills host cell
describe fungus
reproduce by releasing spore by direct contact that can be pick up/ inhaled.
Describe protists
sing cell (unicellular) Eukaryotic, own group found in water.
what is a pathogen
a micro organism which causes communicable disease
what type of disease is Gonorrhoea?
symptoms?
How does is it caused?
how can you treat + prevent it?
-BACTERIA: sexually transmitted
-symptoms: yellow/green discharge from vagina/penis, or pain while urinating
-treatment: penicillin
-prevention: contraception
what type of disease is Rose black spot?
symptoms?
How does is it caused?
how can you treat + prevent it?
-FUNGUS: transmitted by water + wind
-symptoms: black spots on leaves, which drop off early, reduced photosynthesis
-treatment: destroying affected leaves, fingicides

symptoms: vomit, fever, diarrhoea
prevention: vaccination
treatment: antibiotics (bacteria)
what type of disease is tobacco mosaic virus ?
symptoms?
How does is it caused?
how can you treat + prevent it?
VIRUS: transmitted through contact of plant, naturally or by hands
symptoms: mosaic pattern on plant
effects plant grow (less photosynthesis)
prevention: removal + isolation of diseased plants
