B5- Homeostasis Flashcards
what is homeostasis?
regulation of the internal conditions of a cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions for functions in response to internal and external changes.
what are 3 controlled conditions?
temperature, water, glucose level
3 components of automatic control?
receptors, coordination centre, effectors
what organs can be found apart of the coordination centre?
brain, spine, pancreas
what is organs are apart of the central nervous system?
brain, spine
what is organs are apart of peripheral nervous system?
all nervous other than brain + spine
what stimulus can activate homeostasis?
light, smell, taste, sound, temperature, pressure
what are the 3 main parts of homeo stasis?
receptors, coordination centre, effectors
what are the 2 types of effectors?
sweat glands, muscles
what are adaptations of a nerve cell?
Mylein, branched connections, long body
what is mylein?
An insulator to insulate axon so electrical impulses can be transmitted rapidly
what are branched connections?
connect to other nerve cells & form network
what is the adaptation of having a long body?
cover more distance
what are the 3 types of neurons?
sensory neuron, relay neuron, motor neuron
where is the sensory neuron found?
from the receptor to the coordination centre
where can the relay neurons be found?
inside the coordination centre
where can the motor neurons be found?
from the coordination centre to the effectors
what is a synapse?
a gap or junction where there is a connection between neurons ( separated by synaptic clasp)
how do neurons get across the synapse?
electrical signal is transformed into chemical transmitters which is diffused across
what is homeostasis diagram?
STIMULUS–>RECEPTOR—(sensory neuron)—>synapseCORDINATION–(relay neuron)–CENTREsynapse—(motor neuron)—>EFFECTORS—> RESPONCE
