B2 organisation + enzymes Flashcards
what is a tissue?
a tissue is a group of similar cells working together to carry out a specific function. ( can be more than 1 type of cell)
What is an organ?
An organ is a group of different tissues working together to perform a specific function.
What is an organ system?
An organ system is a group of organs working together to carry out a specific function
What is an Organism?
an organism is a group of organ systems working together to carry out a specific function?
What are enzymes?
Biological catalysts produced by living things to break down molecules
What are catalysts?
Biological catalysts which speed up a chemical reaction without being changed or used up in the reaction
what factors can effect a catalysts rate of reaction?
Temperature and PH value
What is the locke and key theory?
Only one substrate can fit into one enzyme, much like a locke and key
what is an active site?
where a unique shape fits onto the substance involved in a reaction.
What enzymes are there?
amylase, carbohydrase, protease, lipase
what do lipids break down into?
glycerol + fatty acids
what do carbonhydrates break down into?
glucose
What does protein break down into?
amino acids
What does starch break down into?
glucose
describe the food test for starch
-Iodine as a reagent
- starting colour of orange,
-dark blue result if positive
describe the food test for protien
-biuren as reagent
-starting colour of blue
-purple for positive result
describe the food test for lipids
-Ethanol as reagent
-starting as clear
-cloudy for a positive result
describe food test for sugars
-Benedict solution as reagent
-starting as blue
-brick red for positive result
-NEEDS TO BE HEATED
Where is amylase found? (3 places)
saliva glands, small intestine and pancreas
where is protease found? (3 places)
stomach, small intestine, pancreas
where is lipase found? (2 places)
pancreas, small intestine
How can you calculate the rate of reaction?
Rate of reaction= amount of time OR product used/ time
(/= divide by)
