Medical asepsis is
“clean technique” All practices that reduce the growth, transfer and spread of pathogenic microorganisms. They include hand washing, bathing, cleaning environment, gloving, gowning, wearing mask, hair and shoe covers, disinfecting articles and use of antiseptics.
Surgical asepsis is
“sterile technique” Practices that keep an area or objects free from all microorganisms non pathogenic and pathogenic including spores and viruses
Two ways to perform hand hygiene
alcohol based hand sanitizer or wash hands with soap and water
Four moments to perform hand hygiene
- before touching a patient
- before a clean or aseptic procedure
- after body fluid exposure risk
- after touching a patient or their surrounds
Alcohol based hand sanitizer are
Facts acting and cause less irritation
Use hand sanitizer when
- hands are not visibly soiled, or have not come in contact with body fluids
- moving from contaminated body site to clean body site during patient care
- before and after each patient contact
- after contact with surfaces in patients environment
- after removing gloves
- before and after urinary catheters, peripheral vascular catheters, invasive devices that do not require surgical placement
- before and after gloves
Hand washing is better when
- hands are visibly soiled
- hands are contained with blood or body fluids
- before eating
- after using the restroom
- if know or suspect exposure to certain organisms such as those causing anthrax, Nora virus clostridium difficile
How to properly use hand sanitizer
- apply the correct about according to the labeling in the palm of hands( typically 1-3 ml) -rub hands together covering all surfaces, for at least 15 sec and hands are dry
- if wearing a wedding band keep on during hand hygiene
Hand washing properly
- keep clothes away from sink, -keep hands lower than elbows -allowing water to flow to finger tips
- cover all areas of hands, include 1 in above hands or 1in above contamination
- wash hands for about 20 sec
- pat dry starting at fingers tips and work way up to forearm
- use second paper towel to turn off water
