Hazardous waste
waste that threatens human health or the environment because it is poisonous, dangerously chemically reactive, corrosive, or flammable
Municipal solid waste
garbage and trash produced by homes and workplace
Industrial solid waste
produced by mines, agriculture, and industries that supply people with goods and services
E-waste
electronic waste (televisions,cell phones, computers, other electronic devices)
Integrated waste management
the use of several options for the handling of solid wastes; includes recycling, waste reduction, composting, landfulling, and others
Closed loop recycling
recycling a product in the same product
Waste-to-energy incinerators
a system in which heat generated by incineration is used as an energy source rather than released into the atmosphere
Cercla
a 1980 federal act that imposes a tax on the chemical and petroleum industries, funds, the cleanup of abandoned and nonoperating hazardous waste site, and authorizes the federal government to respond directly to the release or threatened release of substances that may pose a threat to human health or the environment
Cradle to grave system
a systems tool that looks at the materials used an released throughout the manufacturing, use, and disposal of a product; also known as life-cycle analysis

Brown fields
An urban area of abandoned, vacant factories, warehouses, and residential sites that may be contaminated from past uses
Dioxin
A family of toxic chemical compounds formed when polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are heated or burned. Dioxins are also formed as by-products in the process of chlorinating phenols, which are used in producing herbicides.
Rcra
Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Enacted in 1976 to give EPA “Cradle to Grave” authority on hazardous waste.
Sanitary landfill
A place to deposit solid waste, where a layer of earth is bulldozed over garbage each day to reduce emissions of gases and odors from the decaying trash, to minimize fires, and to discourage vermin
