AP Bio 2.9 Flashcards
What is diffusion?
It’s the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
What molecules move freely across a cell memberane?
We probably already took this
Small, nonpolar molecules (such as O2, N2, anf CO2)
What are molecules that may move in small amounts through the cell membrane?
Small, polar molecules such as water
What is facilitated diffusion, and what passes through it’s protiens?
It’s the movement of molecules from a high to low concentration through transport protiens. Large and small polar molecules move this way. However, charged ions such as Na+ and K+ require channel protiens.
What do large quanities of water move through?
Aquaporins
What is active transport?
It’s a transport mechanism that moves molecules/and or ions across their concentration gradient by the use of metabollic energy (such as ATP)
What are protien pumps?
They are carrier protiens used in active transport
