Facillitated diffusion requires…
membrane protiens
What is facillitated diffusion?
The movement of molecules from a high concentration to a low concentration through protiens
What can be moved in facillitated diffusion?
- Big or small polar molecules
- Large quantities of water
- Charged ions such as Na+ (sodium) and K+ (pottasium)
Large quantities of water can pass though…
aquaporins
Charged ions such as Na+ and K+ require…
channel protiens
Active transport requires…
- Carrier protiens called pumps
- The use of metabollic energy (ATP)
What does active transport do?
It moves molecules against their concentration gradient (from low to high concentration) by the use of carrier protiens
What is cotransport?
It is a secondary form of active transport that uses electrochemical energy to establish a concentration gradient to transport two different ions across the membrane through a protien
What are the two types of cotransport?
Symport: when two different ions flow in the same direction
Antiport: when two different ions flow in opposite directions
What is there a possibility of happening with membranes that utilize the movement of ions?
It may become polarized
What’s an electrochemical gradient?
It’s a type of concentration gradient
(Membrane potential - voltage across a membrane)
