AP Bio 2.11 Flashcards
Both cell types (eukaryotic and prokaryotic) possess…
A plasma membrane
What do prokaryotic cells lack?
Membrane enclosed structures/membranes other than its plasma membrane
However they do have a nucleoid region that conatins the cells genetic m
What do eukaryotic cells possess?
Additional internal membranes as well as membrane bound organelles that compartmentalizes the cell
Genetic material is enclosed in a membrane bound nucleus
How are the nucleus and the ER theorirized to have evolved?
They are thought to be once a part of the inner foldings of the plasma membrane
What is mitochondria thought to be evolved from?
They’re thought to be once free living prokaryotic cells living in endosymbosis with the eukaryotic cell. (Engued by an anaerobic cell through endocytosis.)
It’s throught to be more or less the same for chloroplasts except
for the fact that it’s photosynthetic
What are the pieces of evidence that support the theory of endosymbiosis (regarding mitochondria and chloroplasts)?
- They both have double membranes (evidence for being engulfed in endocytosis)
- They both have circular DNA (like prokaryotes)
- They both contain their own ribosomes
