Proximal
Close to the trunk (shoulder is proximal to elbow)
Distal
Away from the trunk (wrist is distal to elbow and shoulder)
Medial
Closer to the midline
Lateral
Away from the midline
Ipsilateral
On the same side
Contralateral
On the opposite side
Palmar
Refer to your palm
Plantar
Refer to your soles (feet)
Circumduction
Draw a circle with most distal segment while proximal remains fixed. Combination of flex, abduction, extension and adduction
Where does circumduction happen?
Shoulder and hips (ball socket joints)
Inversion
The foot bends toward the midline
Exversion
Foot bends outward the midline
Dorsiflexion
The foot bend upward
Plantarflexion
The foot bend downward
Supination
Palm face upward
Pronation
Palm face down
Protraction
Movement away from the midline (hunching shoulder)
Retraction
The movement away from the midline (squaring the shoulder)
