Anatomical position
Standing facing forward, looking forward, palms of hands facing forward, feet together and toes pointing forward
Three planes
Frontal, sagittal and transverse
Frontal (coronal) plane
Lies vertically and divides the body into anterior and posterior parts
Sagittal plane
Lies vertically and divides the body into left and right parts
Transverse (axial) plane
Lies in the horizontal plane and divides into superior and inferior parts
