Aerobic and anaerobic respiration Flashcards
what is respiration?
It is the process of releasing energy from glucose, which happens constantly in every living cell to give energy to the organism to carry out life processes
what is the equation for aerobic respiration?
C6H12O6+6O2→6CO2+6H2O+ATP
how does it happen (aerobic respiration)
oxygen oxidizes glucose which turns into water, carbon dioxide and ATP (energy). carbon dioxide and water are waste products.
what does aerobic respiration release
ATP and a little heat energy
what is ATP
adenosine triphosphate
what happens to ATP when the body needs energy
when energy is needed the body take one phosphate from ATP turning it into ADP (adenosine diphosphate)
what happens to ATP during respiration
during respiration ADP gets back its phosphate turning into ATP
how does it happen (anaerobic respiration)
it does not use oxygen. glucose gets partially broken down giving the cells energy in cases when oxygen is low.
what does glucose break down into in plants (anaerobic respiration)
ethanol and carbon dioxide
what does glucose break down into in animals (anaerobic respiration)
lactate
