Q

Is rain naturally acidic?

A

Yes

Ph of natural rain water is 6

19
Q

What forms carbonic acid

A

H2O + CO2

H2CO2

20
Q

Acid rain forms when blank are added to the air by blank

A

NOx SOx

Burning fuel

21
Q

What neutralizes lakes

A

Limestone

22
Q

What is the formula for limestone

A

Calcium carbonate
CaCO3
Acts as a base

23
Q

What kind of lakes don’t neutralize

A

Granite bottoms

Ph become as low as 2 which could burn the skin

24
Q

What is NOx and where does it come from

A

Nitrogen oxides

Car exhaust and factories

25
Q

What is SOx and comes mostly from where

A

sulfur oxide

Burning coal

26
Q

NOx + H2O =

A

Nitrous Acid/ nitric acid

27
Q

SOx + H2O =

A

Sulfuric acid

28
Q

Acid rain can be a ph of

A

4

29
Q

Carboxylic acids

A

Formed by adding carboxyl group
Adding the group makes any molecule carboxylic acid
^ contains 1C 1O and 1 OH
Called fatty acids

30

When naming acids first look to see

A

If they are monoatomic and polyatomic

35
Q

Name HNO3
Hydrogen
Nitrate

A

Nitric acid

36
Q

H2SO4
Hydrogen
Sulfate

A

Sulfuric acid

37
Q

H2CO3
Hydrogen
Carbonate

A

Carbonic acid

38
Q

HBr

Hydrogen bromine

A

Hydrobromic acid

39
Q

How do you write the formulas when given the name

A

1) look for hydro meaning mono so it’s hydrogen and one other, then find charges and make the formula neutral
Ex hydrochloric= hcl
2) look for ic or ous, means poly and ic means ended in ate, ous means anything else. Find the element/ion then make it neutral
Ex. Sulfuric (ate) acid= h2(so4) -2

40
Q

How do you know how many hydrogen a to put for formulas

A

You have to make it neutral so look at the charge

41
Q

Name HCL

Hydrogen chlorine

A

Hydro choleric acid
