A16 Flashcards
Stifle joint and its muscles (only muscles)
What are the main muscles of the stifle joint?
M. quadricep femoris
M. popliteus
M. quadricep femoris
Quadriceps femoris
- 4 heads which fuses distally, 3 from femur 1 from pelvis
- Patella in the tendon of insertion
- Most powerful extensor of stifle joint
- Covered by tensor fascia latae, fascia lata, sartorius and medial fascia of thigh
Rectus femoris
- Strongest muscle of the quadriceps
- Most cranial
- Passes between the vastus medialis and lateralis
O: ilium
I: tuberositas tibia and crista tibia
A: flexor of hip, extends the stifle
Vastus lateralis
- Big muscle, most lateral
- Covers the craniolateral aspect of the shaft
O: proximal part of labium laterale
I: tuberositas tibia and crista tibia
A: extends stifle
Vastus intermedius
- Lies in between the rectus femoris and the vastus lateralis
- Needs tobe separated by a scaple to view the intermedius
- Covers the cranial shaft
O: proximal part of labium laterale
I: tuberosita tibia, crista tibia
A: extends the stifle
Vastus medialis
- Caudal to rectus femoris
- Viewed from the medial side
- Covered by pectineus and mostly by the sartorius caudalis
O: medial side of the proximal end of the cranial surface of femur
I: Tuberositas tibia, crista tibia
A: extends stifle
M. popliteus
O. fossa poplitea on lateral condyle
I: prox 3rd of tibia, caudomedial
A. rotates the leg medially and flexes the stifle
Muscles flexing the stifle
M. bicep femoris caudal part
M. gastrocnemius
M. vastus medialis
M. gracilis
M. sartorius pars caudalis
M. semitendinosus
Muscles extending the stifle
M. bicep femoris with cranial portion
M. semimembranosus
Sartorius pars cranialis
M. quadriceps femoris (- vastus medialis)
(Tensor fascia lata)
