9.4 Groundwater Flashcards
Aquifer
A layer of rock or sediments that allows the flow of ground-water, usually through pores between mineral grains or fractures in rock.
Geothermal
Having to do with the internal heat of Earth.
Geyser
A special type of hot spring that periodically shoots water into the air.
Groundwater
Water in Earth’s crust that is in the zone of saturation which means most pore spaces are filled with water.
Hot spring
A spring in which the temperature of water that comes out of the spring is considerably warmer than the mean annual air temperature of the location.
Permeability
A measure of the ability for water to move through a rock or sediment.
Porosity
A measure of the percentage of pore spaces in a rock or sediment.
Recharge
The process by which water is added to an aquifer by infiltration and movement of water from Earth’s surface.
Spring
A place where the water table intersects Earth’s surface, resulting in the flow of water onto the surface.
Water table
The upper surface of the water-saturated zone of Earth’s crust.
Well
A hole dug or drilled into an aquifer for the purpose of supplying water.
