14.2 Air Masses and Fronts Flashcards
Air mass
An extremely large body of air that has similar temperature and moisture characteristics throughout.
Air mass modification
Changes to the characteristics an air mass obtains from its region as the air mass moves over land or water.
Cold front
A front where a cold air mass moves across Earth’s surface to displace a warm air mass.
Front
The narrow boundary or zone where two distinct air masses collide.
Isobar
A line on a weather map that connect points of equal atmospheric pressure.
Occluded front
A front that is formed when a cold front overtakes a slower-moving warm front.
Source region
The region where an air mass forms.
Station model
A graphic representation on a weather map of weather data for a specific place at a specific time.
Stationary front
A front where there is little horizontal movement along the boundary between warm and cold air masses.
Warm front
A front where warm air advances against a mass of colder air.
