12.5 Marine Life Flashcards
Abyssal zone
The benthic environment between 4,000 and 6,000 m (13,000-20,000 ft) in depth.
Aquaculture
The farming of aquatic life in the ocean.
Bathyal zone
The benthic environment which extends down the continental slope towards upper parts of the abyssal plains, ranging in depth from 200 m (660 ft) to roughly 4,000 m (13,000 ft).
Benthic
Relating to ocean floor environments.
Benthos
Organisms that live on or in the ocean floor.
Hadal zone
The benthic environment which occupies the deep sea trenches.
Intertidal zone
The shallowest benthic environment, located between the water boundaries during high and low tides.
Nekton
The actively swimming organisms of the ocean.
Neritic zone
The portion of the pelagic zone overlying the continental shelf.
Nutrient
A substance other than oxygen, carbon dioxide, or water that is required for organisms to live.
Oceanic zone
The great volume of the open ocean beyond the continental shelves.
Pelagic
Relating to open water ocean environments above the ocean floor.
Photic zone
The thin, uppermost part of the ocean that is shallow enough to be lighted by sunlight. The photic zone is approximately 100-200 m (330-660ft) thick.
Phytoplankton
Plankton that use photosynthesis.
Plankton
Organisms in water which are either free-floating or weakly swimming.
