Cartographer
A person who makes maps professionally.
Cartography
The art and science of making maps.
Coordinate system
A system using numbers, such as x-y coordinates or latitude and longitude, to describe the location of a point on Earth.
Global Positioning System (GPS)
A common satellite navigation system used to determine locations on Earth.
Latitude
The location of a place described as an angle north or south of the Equator, with 0° being the Equator, and the poles being 90° north or south. Lines of latitude run parallel to the Equator.
Longitude
The location of a place described as an angle east or west of an arbitrary line running through Greenwich, England, called the prime meridian. Lines of longitude run all the way from one pole to the other.
Prime meridian
The line of longitude assigned a value of zero. The currently accepted prime meridian runs through Greenwich, England.
