2.4 Mapping Earth Flashcards
Contour interval
The difference in elevation between adjacent contour lines on a topographic map.
Contour line
Lines on a topographic map that connect points of equal elevation.
Geographic Information System (GIS)
Computer software that can analyze data about Earth and present the data visually in the form of maps.
Gradient
A mathematical measurement of the rate of change of surface elevation (rise or drop) over a given horizontal distance (run). Units of gradient are feet/mile.
Index contour line
A contour line with a heavier weight which makes contour lines on a topographic map easier to interpret. Usually, every fourth or fifth contour line is an index contour.
Map Legend
A key that shows what each symbol on a map represents.
Map scale
The ratio between distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the ground.
Percent slope
Gradient expressed as a percent. Units of rise and run must be the same.
Scale bar
A graphic representation of the scale of a map consisting of a line with marks like on a ruler.
Topographic map
A map showing elevations on Earth’s surface in a measurable fashion, such as with contour lines or colored elevation bands.
Percent slope equation
percent slope = rise (feet) ÷ run (feet) × 100%
