Proportion of pregnant women who are affected by gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes cause
Natural increase in hyperglycaemic hormones in pregnancy (cortisol, GH, human placental lactogen, progesterone, prolactin).
This is normally compensated by increased insulin release.
If hyperglycaemia is not compensated, can lead to diabetes.
Risk factor for developing T2DM of gestational diabetes
70% increased risk of developing T2DM
Risk factors for gestational diabetes
1-7
1) Previous GDM
2) Prediabetes
3) Ethnicity (aboriginal, Middle Eastern, African)
4) Maternal age over 40 years
5) 1st degree relative with T2DM
6) Obesity
7) Previous macrosomia (baby weight over 4.5kg)
Normal weight gain during pregnancy for a woman of healthy weight
11-16kg
