17 - Cranial Nerves 1 Flashcards
Cranial nerves that supply visceral sensory and motor innervation to neck, chest and abdomen
IX and X
Parts of head innervated by cranial nerves
Anterior half.
Posterior half innervated by a spinal nerve.
CNI
Olfactory
CNII
Optic
CNIII
Ocularmotor
CNIV
Trochlear
CNV
Trigeminal (sensation of the face)
CNVI
Abducent (eye movement)
CNVII
Facial (facial muscles)
CNVIII
Vestibulocochlear (hearing, balance)
CNIX
Glossopharyngeal (sensation to the glossus)
CNX
Vagus
CNXI
Accessory
CNXIII
Hypoglossal (tongue)
Purely sensory cranial nerves
I, II, VIII
Purely motor cranial nerves (innervate skeletal muscle)
III, IV, VI, XI, XII
III, IV, VI are for eye movement
Mixed cranial nerves
V, VII, IX, X
Roles of the trigeminal nerve
Sensation of the face.
Motor component of chewing.
Where do cranial nerves centrally attach to?
Cranial nerve nuclei.
Locations of cranial nerve nuclei III to XII
Brainstem
*Cranial nerve locations
CRANIAL NERVES
Three columns of motor cranial nerves
Somatic, brachial and visceral (autonomic)
Brachial column of motor cranial nerves
Innervate skeletal muscle derived from brachial arches in development.
Nucleus ambiguus
Mostly a motor nucleus.
Lies behind inferior olive of medulla.
Contains nuclei of CNIX and X
Cranial nerves that innervate visceral smooth muscle
III, VII, IX, X
Viscera nucleus of CNIII
Edinger-Westphal nucleus
Visceral nucleus of CNVII
Superior salivatory nucleus
Visceral nucleus of CNIX
Inferior salivatory nucleus
Location of nuclei of visceral afferent cranial nerves.
In medulla.
From CN VII (facial), IX (glossopharyngeal) and X (vagus).
Nucleus solitarius location
Extends from the pons into the medulla.
Parts of nucleus solitarius
Rostral part is gustatory nucleus
Caudal is visceral sensory division
Gustatory nucleus of nucleus solitarius
Primary afferents receiving input from taste buds and palate. (ie VII, IX, X)
Viscera lsensory division of nucleus solitarius
X: afferents from heart; abdominal viscera
IX: baroreceptors & chemoreceptors from carotid body and sinus.
Role of somatic sensory column of cranial nerves
Sensation to face, forehead, mucosa of nose & mouth, most of cranial dura: CNV trigeminal.
Skin behind ear + lining of external auditory meatus: CNVII Facial, CNIX Glossopharyngeal, CNX Vagus
Only cranial nerve in special sensory column of brainstem
CN VIII (vestibulocochlear). Hearing and balance.
Cranial nerves originating in the midbrain
III, IV
Cranial nerves originating in the pons
V, VI, VII, VIII (VIII straddles the pons and medulla)
Cranial nerves originating in the medulla
VIII, IX, X, XII (VIII straddles the pons and medulla)
Name for nucleus that contains cell bodies of CNVII, IX and X
Nucleus solitarius
Name for nucleus that contains cell bodies of CNIX, X
Nucleus Ambiguus
