How is problem solving defined?
A purposeful, goal directed action
What kind of experience is problem solving in the brain?
Conscious

When is something a problem?
Only if the solution isn’t immediately available

When we have a problem but we don’t know what the solution is
What is an impasse?
A mental block that stops us from interpreting a problem
What is restructuring?
We think about the problem in a different way
What is incubating?
Leaving the problem in the subconscious
What are the 4 types of problem?
Well defined, ill defined, knowledge rich and knowledge lean
When is a problem a well-defined one?
All aspects of the problem are clearly laid out- we know the initial state, the rules, and the goal state
When is a problem ill defined?
We don’t know where to start, what the important components are, or where we finish
What makes a problem a knowledge rich one?
We need a lot of knowledge for the solution
What makes a problem a knowledge lean one?
Little knowledge is required for a solution
