6.6 Eye malfunctions: monitoring, treatment, and care needs Flashcards
Monitoring of AMD
Eye tests every 2 years to show if you need to get glasses, change your glasses, and health checks to pick up on any early signs of eye disease
Monitoring cataracts
Photograph of retina- a digital retinal photo of inside the eye. Gives a detailed image of the retina and reveals a lot about eye sight, overall well-being and underlying conditions
Flashing pin pricks- press button when one is seen, checks peripheral vision
Monitoring glaucoma
Optic nerve examination- a bright light shone into the eye examines the structure at the back to evaluate the optic disk, where the optic nerve enters the retina
Monitoring retinopathy
Diabetic eye clinic- diabetics are at risk of diabetic retinopathy, a condition that can lead to sight loss if not treated
Treatments for glaucoma
Eyedrops- they reduce pressure in your eyes and are used between 1-4 times a day
Laser treatment- high energy beam of light is carefully aimed at drainage tubes within the eye, allowing more fluid to drain
Treatments for cataracts
Stronger lenses in glasses- help counteract the issue with the lens, allowing light to focus properly on the retina
Cataract surgery- clouded lens inside the eye is replaced with a clear artificial lens
AMD treatments
No cure for dry AMD
Improving diet for wet AMD- increasing the levels of vitamin A, C &E in the diet can slow the progression of the disease
Injections for wet AMD- injections of drugs directly into the eye can slow the growth of new blood vessels which can prevent vision loss
Treatments for retinopathy
Laser treatment- to treat the growth of new blood vessels at the ack of the eye (retinal)
