1.9 Cardiovascular malfunctions: monitoring, treatment, and care needs Flashcards
What are the methods for monitoring for CHD?
ECG’s track and monitor the electrical impulses within the heart. Identify abnormal or irregular patterns, normally done sitting down or may be done running on a treadmill. Blood tests can also monitor them as they can pick up certain proteins that are released when the heart is damaged.
What is the medical treatment for CHD?
Low doses of aspirin can help as they have an antiplatelet effect, reducing the amount of clotting effects, so clotting is reduced. Statins can reduce the production of LDL cholesterol and increase the removal of it from the bloodstream by the liver. Coronary artery bypass graft where the blood vessels are ‘grafted’ between the aorta and part of the coronary artery that has become blocked. The full recovery of the surgery is 12 weeks.
What are the lifestyle changes treatment for CHD?
Reduce fat in diet as it reduces risk of fat build up, reduce carbohydrates as it reduces fat storage and blood sugar peaks can damage arteries, reduce salt intake as it links with high blood pressure and strokes, avoid sudden extraneous exercise as it puts pressure on blood vessels which could lead to clots/ strokes, take up regular appropriate exercise as it helps you loose weight and lowers blood pressure, stop smoking as it reduces pressure and prevents damage to arterial walls, and reduce alcohol intake as it lowers pressure and reduces weight.
What is the method of measuring hypertension?
Blood pressure is monitored through the use of a sphygmomanometer. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is given two figures. The systolic pressure (higher) over diastolic pressure (lower)
What is the medical treatment for hypertension?
Beta blockers which is a group of drugs that reduce heart rate and therefore pressure on arteries, and diuretics which increase urination which reduces the sodium content in tissue fluid and lowering pressure.
