5.2 Structure and function of the brain Flashcards

1
Q

Q

What do the meninges contain?

A

Cerebrospinal fluid that provides a cushion between the brain and the skull. Also provide structure for important blood vessels.

Q

What does the forebrain contain?

A

Contains the cerebral cortex, the corpus callosum, and the hypothalamus. It is the largest and most obvious part of the brains mass

Q

What is the midbrain?

A

It lies on top of the brainstem and is involved in visual and auditory processing.

Q

What is the hindbrain?

A

Located at the back of the head and looks like an extension of the spinal cord. It contains the medulla and the cerebellum.

8
Q

Why does the grey matter have many folds?

A

Because they add to surface area so large amounts of information can be processed

Q

Even though the two hemisphere’s are separated, how are they still connected?

A

Via a thick bundle of nerve fibres called the corpus callosum which allows both hemispheres to communicate with each other.

Q

What is the frontal lobe?

A

The largest lobe of the brain and make up about 1/3 of the surface area of each hemisphere.

16
Q

What does the medulla control?

A

The automatic functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and swallowing.

17
Q

What does the cerebellum receive?

A

Messages from the muscles, tendon, joints, and structures in our eat to control balance, coordination, and movement.

18
Q

What does the cerebellum store?

A

Procedural memories which are the memories of how to perform complex motor actions, e.g., walking.
