1.3 Structure of the heart Flashcards
Where does the pulmonary circulation take blood?
To and from the lungs.
Where does the systemic circulation take blood?
To and from the body.
Where does the right side of the heart pump blood too?
The lungs, where gas exchange occurs.
Where does the left side of the heart pump blood too?
The rest of the body.
Where are the two atriums located at the heart?
At the top.
Where are the two ventricles located?
At the bottom.
What do the inferior and superior vena cava do?
Bring deoxygenated blood to right atrium.
What do the pulmonary veins do?
Bring oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart.
What do pulmonary arteries do?
Takes deoxygenated blood from right ventricle to lungs.
What does the aorta do?
Takes oxygenated blood from left ventricle to other organs.
What does the tricuspid valve do?
Prevents blood flowing back into the right atrium from right ventricle.
What does the pulmonary arterial (semi-lunar) valve do and where is it located?
Located at the entrance of pulmonary artery and allows blood flow out the heart but not back in.
What does the bicuspid (mitral) valve do?
prevents blood flowing back into the left atrium from left ventricle.
What does the aortic (semi lunar) valve do and where is it located?
Located at the entrance of the aorta and allows blood to flow out of the heart but not back in.
Why is the Atria less muscular?
Because they receive blood returning from the body under lower pressure.
